The Stars Below

Everyone hurts their necks with smartphones,
we used to be proper humans
and crane our necks the other way, toward the sky,
not toward our doom, and,
toward the heavens we have for millenia and wondered
how this all came to be, it couldn’t be a coincidence or blunder,

Stars came to be our light, our guides, our lanterns through the night
while we relied on them to get home alright.
When I think of stars on Earth, I think of humans, but not necessarily the ones we might think –
the stars below aren’t celebrities to me, but people who will casually save a stranger from the brink,
the people who take that big job to support their kids, not to buy a 10th car, or a multimillion dollar mansion bid.

The individuals less interested in residual$
and more focused on their family’s health, it’s habitual.
‘The salt of the earth’ sounds about right in their description,
If someone needs them, they’re already on a mission,
I didn’t have to crane my neck up or down to see,
This whole time, they’ve been shining, all around me. – RSM
