We Are All Time Travelers

We’re living out our future nostalgia right now.

Young people grow up, look at past generations and ask “How!?”

cuz nothing ever feels quite the same as it once was or used to be

Ten, fifteen years passed, and yesteryear’s kids are now adults, you see;

Time waits for no one, not even the few people left who repair clocks,

life is measured in time and his-story never repeats, but it rhymes,

the past echoes into the future and the present youth, our future, is shocked

by how things used to be, from past wars to how much you could get with a dime.

They, whoever ‘they’ are, say “some things never change,”

but apart from what’s written, we only have our own life span to gauge.

Life and time seem linear, like highway lane lines lining you up along a long journey

but all roads circle back into a closed loop, that’s what I’ve been learning,

that’s why by the time I’m hopefully a young man of eighty-five

I’ll have ‘seen it’ or ‘heard it all’ – at the base level, at least;

but by then my goal is to not get bitter, keep an open mind,

and repair my old roads while the next generations pave new streets. – RSM
